One formula for a whole block
A financial modeling exercise from Modeldrill. Solve it with a live spreadsheet grid in your browser, with Fill right and Fill down, and it is checked the moment you submit.
The task
Three cost lines are each a fixed share of revenue (the shares are in column B). Write one formula in C7, fill it right to G7, then fill down to row 9 so the whole block C7:G9 is covered. It only works with mixed references.
What this exercise teaches
A dollar sign locks only the part it sits in front of. C$5 slides across but never down; $B7 slides down but never across. One formula then fills a full grid.
A hint if you get stuck
Revenue is always in row 5 but its column changes: lock the row (C$5). The share is always in column B but its row changes: lock the column ($B7).
